What Is Charge Air Cooler in Marine Engine?

Charge Air Coolers

The charge air cooler (also known as the scavenge air intercooler) is situated between the turbocharger and the engine's scavenge air input manifold. The charge air cooler's goal is to reduce air inlet temperature, hence improving air density and enhancing engine efficiency.

Large amounts of charge air from the turbo charger typically require cooling from 200°C to 45°C before entering the scavenging manifold. While great thermal performance and minimal pressure drop are vital, the construction must also be exceptionally robust in order to handle the extremely high air velocities. High grade materials are required to ensure a long useful life when using seawater or fresh water as a cooling medium.

Leaking or broken charge air coolers can result in power loss, increased emissions, increased fuel consumption, and higher exhaust temperatures, all of which can contribute to excessive engine wear/damage. The quality of the air cooler is thus critical to the proper operation of any turbocharged diesel engine.
